FREAK SHOW - A CELEBRATION OF HUMAN DEFORMITY

This exhibition boldly went where none had gone before by declaring itself to be "a celebration of human deformity." YAMBAR's images of famous sideshow freaks allowed viewers a rare opportunity to examine the lifestyles of those who worked the carnival and circus midways before everything became "the politically correct mess" it is today.  With piped-in circus music and antique circus posters, the experience was made complete.  These are the images that remain. All paintings were created using acrylic and enamel paints on 4'X 4' Masonite sheets.


In July, 1999, The Barnum Museum in Bridgeport, CT not only received a visit from Chris, but a 4' x 4' pop art portrait of the late, great showman P.T. Barnum and his associate Tom Thumb.  The work, created in 1993, was held in warehouse storage until Chris was able to find the perfect opportunity in his touring and creative schedule to properly present the gift to the museum first hand.

"It was always my intention to give the portrait to the museum in proper fashion," Yambar explained, "Mr. Barnum is one of my personal heroes so going to the Barnum Museum was like making a journey to  the Holy Land.  It was everything I'd ever imagined and one of the greatest honors of my career."

Museum curator Kathleen Maher stated "The painting is great fun and will serve many of the museum's rotating exhibition interpretations."
